Doctoral dresses

Apologies for the long break - it is very much justified, though, as I have spent the last two months working hard on finishing my doctoral thesis, which I (finally!) submitted last Thursday. A very good feeling - although I am yet to defend my opus magnum.

In other news, after Vintage Girl's post, I got in touch with LindyBop, a lovely little company producing vintage-inspired dresses, and we've started a mini-collaboration. Adrian and I took several photographs of their items, and these will eventually be used as promotional material, just to show how the clothes look on a real person.

Przepraszam za dłuższą przerwę - czuję się usprawiedliwiona, jako że przez ostatnie dwa miesiące wykańczałam pracę doktorską. Oddałam ją (w końcu!) w zeszły czwartek i upajam się obecnie poczuciem ulgi i wolności, mimo że muszę jeszcze obronić moje dzieło.

A z drugiej strony, natchniona postem Vintage Girl, skontaktowałam się z LindyBop, malutką firmą produkującą suknie inspirowane stylem vintage - i podjęliśmy współpracę. Adrian i ja zrobiliśmy kilka zdjęć, które będą wykorzystane jako materiał promocyjny, pokazujący sukienki "na człowieku". Zresztą bardzo polecam produkty. Doda się do nich odpowiednie buty i fryzurę, i stylizacja z lat 40stych/50tych gotowa!

Oto jest Kasia

So far two photographers have made a brief appearance on the blog: Adrian and Marten. This time I'd like to introduce you to Kasia, who - to our great joy - joins us during some shoots. She's a talented photographer (as you can see here or here), and now you can meet her in person. Enjoy photos of Kasia, taken by Adrian (who incidentally is this woman's lucky fiance!).

Do tej pory dwóch fotografów (Adrian i Marten) mignęło na blogu. Tym razem przedstawiam Wam Kasię, utalentowaną paią fotograf (fotografkę? Adrianie, polonisto, pomóż!), która od czasu do czasu dołącza do naszych sesji zdjęciowych, czego wspaniałe efekty można zobaczyć choćby tu albo tu. Tym razem występuje w roli modelki - a po drugiej stronie obiektywu stoi Adrian, który zresztą jest narzeczonym tej wspaniałej dziewczyny.

Witamy po przerwie! Lato w Oksfordzie żadne - poza pięciodniowym przebłyskiem słońca, lało CAŁY LIPIEC! W tych warunkach sprawdzałam się w nowej roli, mianowicie nauczycielki zoologii na jednej ze szkół letnich, które latem opanowują miasto. Moi uczniowie byli średnio zachwyceni perspektywą wycieczek w deszczu i błocie, ale daliśmy radę: udało nam się odwiedzić farmę uniwersytecką, pobrać próbki wody i zobaczyć rzeczne bezkręgowce, przetestować obroże z radionadajnikami, przenalizować tropy różnych zwierząt i nawet całkiem nieźle się przy tym bawić!
Tymczasem załączam zdjęcia z sesji, na której gościnnie wystąpiła pewna bardzo fotogeniczna Agnieszka.

Welcome back after the break! Oxford's summer is hopeless - apart from a five-day sunny spell, ALL OF JULY was rainy. In those conditions I was trying out a new role, i.e. that of a zoology teacher at one of the many summer schools that take over Oxford in the summer. My students were pretty unimpressed at the idea of outings in rain and mud, but we managed to get on with it, and have visited the university farm, collected water samples to look at aquatic invertebrates, tested radio-tracking collars, analysed the tracks of various animals - and had a good amount of fun at it too!
In the meantime I bring you photos from a shoot which has been graced by the presence of a certain highly photogenic Agnieszka.

Summer recipes

Here are two recipes for you.
First of all, the perfect summer dress:
- no sleeves
- a wide skirt
- a built-in corset
- a floral pattern.
I have three such dresses, in three lengths - hopefully the other two will make an appearance sometime soon.

Secondly, a perfect summer shoot: find four (FOUR!) extremely talented photographers, and keep on smiling while four cameras point at you from different directions. Don't get too big-headed!

Po pierwsze, na idealną sukienkę letnią:
- brak rękawów
- szeroka spódnica
- wbudowany gorset
- kwiecisty wzór.
Tego lata czekają na mnie trzy takie suknie, w trzech długościach. Mam nadzieję, że dwie pozostałe niedługo pojawią się na blogu.


Po drugie, przepis na idealną sesję letnią. Weź czterech (tak! czterech!) utalentowanych fotografów i uśmiechaj się zachęcająco do czterech obiektywów wycelowanych z różnych stron. Nie strać głowy z nadmiaru uwagi!

A jubilant alien

It's the jubilee weekend! All of the UK is decorated with Union Jack bunting, the Queen is swamped with boats on the Thames (does she even like boats?), and I decided to honour the wonderful country that has hosted me for the past six years with a commemorative blog post. Especially since the weather also decided to celebrate the holidays - with a downpour, so I won't be attending street parties. 

Obchodzimy rocznicowy weekend! Cała Wielka Brytania przybrana jest chorągiewkami, królowa dostaje w prezencie paradę łodzi na Tamizie (ciekawe, czy w ogóle lubi łodzie), a ja oddaję hołd krajowi, który od sześciu lat jest moim domem. W dodatku pogoda również celebruje święto - na swój sposób: opadami, więc nie będę brać udziału w imprezach ulicznych.

England is a funny, funny place. And the English are a very strange people. In 1940s, a Hungarian called George Mikes described and explained a lot of their quirks in a book which I still find surprisingly accurate. I am a happy alien in a strange land. One of the things which I have discovered while living here is the great British fondness for tea towels. They apparently make great souvenirs and are sold everywhere. In order to contribute to the British economy, I bought a little Jubilee tea towel - a pretty innocuous one, with a crown and some writing. However, there were others on sale: with the Queen's portrait, and with the Union Jack. I was tempted to buy them, but then I thought I'd feel a bit bad wiping stains with the Queen's face.

Anglia to dziwne i zabawne miejsce, a niektóre zachowania Anglików nadal pozotają dla mnie zupełnie niezrozumiałe. W latach 40-stych George Mikes, Węgier, opisał i wytłumaczył bardzo wiele angielskich dziwactw w książce, którą uważam za niespodziewanie aktualną nawet teraz. Sama natomiast zauważyłam angielskie uwielbienie do... ściereczek. Ścierki uchodzą za wspaniały upominek i sprzedaje się je wszędzie i przy każdej okazji. W ramach wkładu w brytyjską gospodarkę kupiłam rocznicową ściereczkę, z dość niewinnym nadrukiem korony i napisem. Obok sprzedawano inne wzory - portret królowej i flagę brytyjską.  Byłabym się skusiła, ale jednak głupio mi wycierać plamy twarzą królowej!

A while ago Miss Araven - together with Lady Carotta, Candy Store, Greta Vintage Store and Wild Orchid - organised a competition for a set inspired by fashion from the 1920s and 30s. I am very proud and honoured to present to you the winning outfit, along with other pictures from the same shoot (by Marten Collins, and his talented four-legged assistant, Zebedy). Yay! Thank you!

Jakiś czas temu Panna Araven - razem z Lady Carottą, Candy Store, Greta Vintage Store i Wild Orchid - zorganizowała konkurs "Akcja elegancja", inspirowany latami 20stymi i 30stymi. Mam ogromny zaszczyt i przyjemność przedstawić zwycięską stylizację, a oprócz niej kilka zdjęć z tej samej sesji (z Martenem Collinsem i jego utalentowanym czworonożnym asystentem Zebedym). Hurra! And so this time we went to Christ Church - to the older folks it's the Oxford college founded by Henry VIII, home to Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson, John Locke, Robert Hooke; to the younger - the place where they filmed the Harry Potter movies. As a member of the University I can run up and down Hogwarts staircases as I please. And take Adrian with me to take pictures.

Tym razem zaszliśmy do Christ Church. To miejsce znane wśród starszych osób jako oksfordzki koledż założony przez Henryka VIII, którego członkami byli m. in. Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson (znany jako Lewis Carroll), John Locke, Robert Hooke; wśród młodszych to głownie miejsce, gdzie filmowano Harry'ego Pottera. Jako członkini Uniwersytetu mogę biegać po schodach Hogwartu ile dusza zapragnie. I wziąć ze sobą Adriana, żeby robił zdjęcia.
